Mandelic Acid History and Benefits in Skin Care Products

Mandelic acid has long been used in the medical community as an antibacterial agent after laser skin treatments. Recently, it has also gained popularity as an effective treatment for a wide rance of skin conditions including adult acne, melasma, rosacea, and fine lines.

A member of the alpha hydroxy acid family, Mandelic Acid is a natural exfoliant and is commonly used in chemical peel treatments.

The exfoliating process of Mandelic Acid begins as it gently penetrates, breaks up and removes dead skin cells of the stratum corneum or the epidermal (most outer) layer of skin.

Less concentrated formulations can be used every day to promote new cell growth and as a general skin wash. Compared to alpha hydroxy acids such as Glycolic Acid or Pyruvic Acid an alpha-keto acid, the larger molecular structure of Mandelic Acid allows it to absorb into the skin more slowly and evenly causing less irritation and discomfort during and after treatment.

Also, unlike Glycolic Acid or Pyruvic Acid, Mandelic Acid contains excellent antibacterial properties making it a wonderful tool for the treatment of acne.

History of Mandelic Acid:  The discovery by J. W. Walker and V. K. Krieble in 1909. It is formed by heating bitter almond extract with diluted hydrochloric acid. The name is derived from the German "Mandel" for "almond".

Mandelic Acid helps to break up the areas of skin effected with hyperpigmentation to create a more even skin tone or complexion.  Mandelic Acid has shown great results in all skin tones especially more pigmented skins.

The acceleration of the cellular turnover rate due to its alpha hydroxy properties, Mandelic Acid skin products rids the skin of dead skin cells which creates that dull-grey look to the complexion increasing the natural creases in the skin. Mandelic Acid helps to strengthen the collagen (ex: Springs in a mattress are like collagen fibers in skin- start to sag--Mandelic Acid helps build and strengthen the collagen.) Thus, delaying and even reversing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines in the skin.
